Fans of European football across the globe are eagerly awaiting the commencement of the 2019/2020 season.
Whether they live in Africa or America, whether they reside in Australia or Asia, whether their home is in South or North America or in many other islands across the globe, the feeling is the same. The fans can no longer wait to see the kick-off of a new season.
Cable television outlets are struggling to cope with the myriads of customers trooping into their shops to renew their subscription or to purchase a new decoder to ensure that they watch as many matches as they can, during the season.
Sellers of jerseys and other sports memorabilia are smiling to the banks as their level of patronage has progressed geometrically. The preliminary rounds of the UEFA Champions League and the Europa League commenced in June. But, the draws for the group stages will take place on August 29 and 30, respectively. For fans of the Champions League, will Liverpool successfully defend their title or will clubs like Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich or Manchester City dethrone them?
Fans of the Europa League are anxious over which team will lift the trophy at the end of the season. Will Chelsea or another club that will come from the UEFA Champions League win the Europa title or will a club which started from the group stages go all the way like Chelsea did last season?
The English Premier League will commence on August 9 and will come to an end on May 17. Fans are eager to see how things will pan out. Will last season’s rivalry between Liverpool and eventual champions, Manchester City, continue this season? Will this season be the time Jurgen Klopp and his wards will finally win the Premier League? Will a relatively small team take the league by storm as Leicester City did in 2015/16 season?
The Spanish La Liga will commence on August 16 with fans of Spanish football wondering whether Real Madrid will correct last season’s errors and fight for the domestic and European titles or Barcelona will continue to dominate. Will Atletico Madrid challenge for trophies this season? Fans want to see how Eden Hazard and Antoine Griezmann will fit into Real Madrid and Barcelona, respectively.
Whether they follow the Champions League or Europa League; the English Premier League or the French League One; the German Bundesliga or the Spanish La Liga or even the Italian Serie A, fans are yearning to see those curling free-kick from Lionel Messi; those bullet shots from Cristiano Ronaldo; those dazzling dribbles from Neymar Junior; those runs from Mohamed Salah, and those daring saves from Alison Baker. They are eager to see the tears and the joys; the celebrations and the heartbreaks; the gaffers that will be hired and fired in the course of the season.
As we enjoy another season, may the football fraternity always remember this slogan, “One game; Football without violence.”
