When Manchester United sacked Jose Mourinho on December 18, 2019, the bookmakers’ favourite to land the United job in the summer was Mauricio Pochettino, the Tottenham Hotspur manager. This is because he could not be available for the immediate take over from Jose Mourinho.
Manchester United had indicated to the football world that they would not rush into making an appointment until the summer. The logic behind was to find the right manager for the club. The club felt they had made wrong appointments of managers’ post the Ferguson era. True to this feeling by the club is that no manager has lasted more than three seasons. The club has become the exact opposite of the clubs they had ridiculed over the stability of managers. Manchester United have become a sacking club with Jose Mourinho following the sacking of Louis Van Gaal and David Moyes. The six years contract given to Moyes at the time of his appointment still has a month to run.
Ferguson once said that Pochettino is the best manager in the Premier League before the appointment of Jose Mourinho at Manchester United. True to Ferguson’s assessment of the Argentine is that he has brought stability and loyalty to Tottenham Hotspur. The club has become a consistent top four finisher during his time at the club. Tottenham players are the least paid in comparison to their top six rivals. Tottenham has been unable to sign any players during the past two transfer windows, yet the club has remained a force to reckon with.??
Pochettino was not a popular choice at Southampton when he replaced fan favourite Nigel Adkins but quickly won over the fans with a series of excellent performance by the team and going to finishing in Europa league positions. Tottenham lured him to North London, where he stamped his authority on the club. He plays an attractive brand of football and hi-trust in the youth standing tall on his curriculum vitae. Under Ferguson, United played a beautiful brand of football and gave chance to the youth just as Pochettino is doing at Spurs.
The sacking of Jose Mourinho was to be a turning point in which the club will handle its football activities. Solskjaer was appointed on an interim basis; however, not envisaged the kind of turn around the club would experience under his tutelage. He went on to win 10 of his first 11 games in charge. The pinnacle of the United board change their stance was the win in Paris where against all odds, United won 3-1 on the night against the much-fancied PSG. On March 28, 2019, the club appointed Solskjaer has the permanent manager ending the patient wait for the summer.
Manchester United failed to exercise patience to land a gem of a manager in Mauricio Pochettino who now has a chance of winning the Champions League.
