I happen to be a fan of the World University Rankings, and I closely monitor the trend of Universities around the world whenever new universities ranking comes out. Just few days ago, the QS World University Rankings for 2020 was released.
As I was going through the QS World University Rankings, region by region, this particular University in Malaysia caught my attention. Of course, I am aware that research is not the only criteria for ranking these universities; I do understand that it also takes a significant portion of the assessment. From my little knowledge and experience, I also know that there so many things that happen behind closed doors.
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow once said that "The heights by great men reached and kept were not attained by sudden flight, but they, while their companions slept, were toiling upward in the night". While some Asia Universities keep boasting about themselves in the top 50 or 100 Universities in the world, and only managed to climb 3 to 5 steps forward or backward, Universiti Malaya (UM), Malaysia, was gradually and quieting climbing. They have moved from a position of 167 in the world in 2014 to rank 70 in the world, as of today's QS World University Rankings. In 6 years, this growth is astonishing and deserve commendation.
In 5-10 years from now, I see Universiti Malaya (UM), Malaysia, in the top 30 universities in the world. For the brains behind this tremendous achievement, please do not relent in your effort. For the other Asia universities currently in the top 69, by the time you wake up, Universiti Malaya (UM), Malaysia will be long gone.
