A meteorologist – a lady – for a TV station in Detroit, USA committed suicide in December 2018 following complications caused by corrective laser eye surgery. The procedure is said to be safe; therefore, it is widely preferred in countries where it is available. Unfortunately, in this case, it failed.
Some tell-tale signs emerged which suggest that the lady suffered depression following the unsuccessful procedure. The tell-tale signs are vital to note because right now, there might be a family member, friend or colleague who is struggling with depression; you can help pull them back before they take the fatal plunge.
In a video recording before her death, the lady expressed regret for her decision to undergo the procedure. In hindsight, she thought her contact glasses had served her well; she didn’t need to undergo surgery. In other words, she was plagued by guilt for her decision to undergo a procedure that hurt her rather than help her. Of course, she had no way of knowing how the procedure would turn out. Still, she felt responsible for the mistake that turned her world upside down.
If somebody makes an investment decision that leads to financial ruin or drives a vehicle that gets involved in an accident that leads to the death of family members who were in the car; a sense of guilt is likely to set in. I know a man who got conned of huge amounts of money by his friend in a business deal. He was still financially okay in spite of his loss, but he couldn’t forgive himself for the mistake of trusting his friend. He tragically ended his life.
Furthermore, the lady’s mother said that she observed that her daughter lost a lot of weight following the procedure. She asked her if she was okay, but she felt that her daughter didn't get better. In other words, she had given up and did not think that she did ever recover. She had entered the stage of hopelessness. If you hear somebody repeatedly express despair about a significant setback, don’t ignore it and assist them in finding help. Refer them to a counselor, or talk to somebody who can help them break the train of thought fomenting hopelessness.
