Status matters for everybody, whether you are male or female. If males want high status, then it is okay for females to want the same. Status means equality in rights. Today, women are enjoying a high status throughout the world. When we talk about a girl's status, people shut their mouth. No doubt they have raised their status through education, but a majority of Indian women do not enjoy equal status to men in this modern era. They are still not treated at par with the man in social and family life. Women's status in the family as well as in society depends on her level of education. It is often thought that though she is highly qualified and economically independent, she still suffers many problems in male-dominated societies. There are many prominent reasons for their weak status, for example, little girls being brought up in a male-dominated society, traditional thoughts, cultural atmosphere and the words of elders (grandparents). They appreciate non-essential tasks executed by grandsons but alert girl child and force her to do household work. They make them realise that they are only homemakers. So they have not been able to shake off this influence even after getting high qualifications.
Somewhere old systems are also responsible for the lower status of women. Being well educated, they are not allowed to accept a placement far away from their house. Also, tough decisions are taken by elder brothers or fathers. Sometimes the choice of working is decided by in-laws. Such conditions and plagued rituals scratch the identity of the educated girl child. The worst example is in grammar especially few sentences like Ram goes to school. Rani cooks food. These examples depict gender discrimination. Families mainly in villages choose the best facilities for their sons and are least bothered about the basic education of their girl child. Everybody has the right to education. In India unfortunately, gender inequality in education is extreme. Education is one of the most important means of empowering the woman to attain a status not limited to the family but also in society. The educational achievements of women can have ripple effects within the family and across a generation.
Indeed there is a need to go through the contributions of females in different fields. Smt. Indira Gandhi, Rani Laxmi Bai, and Kalpana Chawla. They made their families and country proud. The girl child should be given equal rights. Our society has many flaws and many traditional rituals. However, we shouldn't only curb them but also nip them. Gender discrimination should be stopped. Psychologists should counsel people who have poor thinking.
There is a need to change the system and think broadly to give space to a girl child so that she can touch the sky. Our society should understand that girls are not less in any race. Today women are excelling almost in every field and winning laurels. So let them choose their careers and make them secure, encourage your daughter and sister. Women can enjoy equal and robust status in male-dominated society if they have the self-confidence to assert their equality and rights.
