On our retirement or when we leave a company for a new assignment, there would be a successor to take over the responsibilities and workload. As a responsible employee, it is our duty to hand over the duties in the best manner possible, which is an indication of one’s professionalism.
A successor could be an existing employee in the company or a recruit. When it comes to an existing employee, handing over is not very complicated, since he/she is aware of the culture of the company and its nature of the business. But when it comes to a recruit, he/she may be new to the nature of the business as well as to the culture. It is essential to give a general picture of the company and imply what would be expected. It would facilitate the new recruit to adapt him/her self to the company. Some companies require personalities that are outgoing but with openness and expertise. Those types of companies are the best match for extroverts. The nature of some companies is more to be formal and to maintain the status quo, requiring high conformation to some set standards. Those companies are most suitable for introverts.
Professional employee would ensure that his/her successor is comfortable with his/her new assignment. Firstly, help him/her with the necessary infrastructure, especially with the needed IT facilities and make him/her aware of where to seek assistance /information if needed. This would be very important for the first job workers and not very relevant for the above manager level.
A sound handing-over would need at least one week of work transfer. When the practical situations arrive, and the successor would be supervised and advised to adjust accordingly. Situation handling and the effective management of interpersonal relationships are one of the most critical aspects of work life. Sometimes an employee fails not because they lack knowledge of what to do but because they are poor in handling work-related occurrences and coping up with the stress that may not be work-related. This would be helpful even for the top cadre professionals.
Finally, when the work and responsibilities are handed over, some tends to keep short cuts and the helpful tips to own self. Some believe that it is their own identity, and the copyright of the know-how belongs to them. If a person is very confident about his/her skills and happens to be extroverted, he/she would share his/her personally acquired knowledge through experience.
The best gratitude an employee could express to a company is to leave a successor that can step into the role and carry out the duties without missing any components.
